    Inhibition of browning in foodstuffs

    Get PDF
Addition of water-soluble sulfur-containing compounds, thio compounds or potential thio compounds, to a mixture of carbohydrates, and either proteins, peptides, or amino acids can retard or completely eliminate the browning process. Determining factor is dependent upon the concentration of the anti-browning agent in the aqueous media

    16 x 25 Ge:Ga Detector Arrays for FIFI LS

    Get PDF
We are developing two-dimensional 16 x 25 pixel detector arrays of both unstressed and stressed Ge:Ga photoconductive detectors for far-infrared astronomy from SOFIA. The arrays, based on earlier 5 x 5 detector arrays used on the KAO, will be for our new instrument, the Far Infrared Field Imaging Line Spectrometer (FIFI LS). The unstressed Ge:Ga detector array will cover the wavelength range from 40 to 120 microns, and the stressed Ge:Ga detector array from 120 to 210 microns. The detector arrays will be operated with multiplexed integrating amplifiers with cryogenic readout electronics located close to the detector arrays. The design of the stressed detector array and results of current measurements on several prototype 16 pixel linear arrays are reported. They demonstrate the feasibility of the current concept. ***This paper does not include Figures due to astro-ph size limitations. Utilizing remote sensing of Thematic Mapper data to improve our understanding of estuarine processes and their influence on the productivity of estuarine-dependent fisheries

LANDSAT thematic mapper (TM) data are being used to refine and validate a stochastic spatial computer model to be applied to coastal resource management problems in Louisiana. Two major aspects of the research are: (1) the measurement of area of land (or emergent vegetation) and water and the length of the interface between land and water in TM imagery of selected coastal wetlands (sample marshes); and (2) the comparison of spatial patterns of land and water in the sample marshes of the imagery to that in marshes simulated by a computer model. In addition to activities in these two areas, the potential use of a published autocorrelation statistic is analyzed

GFR increases before renal mass or ODC activity increase in rats fed high protein diets

GFR increases before renal mass or ODC activity increase in rats fed high protein diets. Consumption of a high protein diet causes renal hypertrophy and increased glomerular filtration rate (GFR). To determine the relationship between increases in GFR, renal ornithine decarboxylase activity (ODC), arginase activity, and renal growth, dietary protein intake was increased from 8.5% to 40% in 50 male Sprague-Dawley rats (HP). Forty-one rats remained on 8.5% protein as time controls (LP). Eight to 17 animals were killed daily for measurement of kidney weight (kidney wt), ODC and arginase activities, total kidney protein and DNA content. GFR increased within the first 24 hours after the increase in dietary protein and reached a maximum within 48hrs. ODC increased from 9.7 ± 0.8 U/g to a peak of 170 ± 35 U/g at 48 hours, decreasing to a stable value of 28.6 ± 8.0 U/g at 72 hours and 25.4 ± 5.1 U/g at 168 hours, a value significantly greater than that at time zero. Arginase activity did not change. Kidney wt as percent body weight (body wt) increased after the initial increase in both GFR and in ODC activity. The peak in ODC activity corresponded with the maximum increase in GFR and preceded the increase in renal mass. After GFR stabilized, ODC activity decreased to a plateau and renal growth relative to body wt ceased. The increase in kidney weight was accompanied by a parallel increase in total kidney protein. Kidney protein/ kidney DNA ratio increased significantly by 96 hours, indicating that renal hypertrophy had occurred. The sequence of these events suggests that increasing GFR may trigger the rise in ODC activity

Comparison of Expectant and Excisional/Ablative Management of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia Grade 2 (CIN2) in the Era of HPV Testing

OBJECTIVE: To investigate conservative and excisional/ablative treatment outcomes for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 (CIN2) following introduction of virological test of cure. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of prospectively collected data at a teaching hospital colposcopy unit. 331 sequential biopsy-proved CIN2 cases were involved. CIN2 cases diagnosed between 01/07/2014 and 31/12/2017 were either conservatively managed or treated with excision/ablation and then were followed up until discharge from colposcopy clinic and then using the national cervical cytology database. Outcomes were defined: cytological/histological regression was absence of high-grade CIN on biopsy and/or high-grade dysplasia; virological regression was cytological/histological regression and negative human papillomavirus testing; persistence was biopsy-proven CIN2 and/or moderate dyskaryosis; progression was biopsy-proven CIN3+ and/or severe dyskaryosis. RESULTS: Median follow-up was 22.6 months (range: 1.9–65.1 months). Among 175 (52.9%) patients initially managed conservatively, 77.3% (133/172) regressed, 13.4% (23/172) persisted, 9.3% (16/172) progressed to CIN3+, and 97 (56.4%) patients achieved virological regression. 156 (47.1%) patients underwent initial excision/ablation, with an 89.4% (110/123) virological cure rate. After discharge, 7 (4.0%) and 3 (1.9%) patients redeveloped CIN in the conservative and treatment groups, respectively, during a median period of 17.2 months. CONCLUSION: Conservative management is a reasonable and effective management strategy in appropriately selected women with CIN2. High rates of histological and virological regression should be expected. The previously mentioned data provide useful information for deciding management options

    Diacetonitrile[N,N′-bis(2,6-diisopropyl-phenyl)ethane-1,2-diimine] dichloridochromium(II) acetonitrile solvate

The title compound, [CrCl2(CH3CN)2(C 26H36N2)]·CH3CN, was synthesized by the reaction of CrCl2(THF)2 with N,N′-bis-(2,6- diisopropyl-phen-yl)ethane-1,2-diimine in dichloro-methane/acetonitrile. The chromium center is coordinated by two N atoms of the chelating diimine ligand, two chloride ions in a trans configuration with respect to each other, and by two N atoms of two acetonitrile mol-ecules in a distorted octa-hedral geometry
